Instagram is a lovely photo and video-sharing social media app owned by Facebook as well. The app was developed by Facebook Inc. by Kevin Systrom and Mike Kriege and lunched exclusively on iOS on October 2010.
The American online publisher of technology industry news TechCrunch made Instagram a runner-up for “Best Mobile App” of 2010. The said app was nominated in Teen Choice Award under Choice Social Network in 2012. Instagram won the “Best in Apps” category for the 4th Annual Shorty Awards in 2012. The digital media website Mashable named Instagram as No. 1 on its list of “The 100 best iPhone apps of all time” in 2015. Moreover, Mashable also noted that Instagram is one of the most influential social media networks around the globe of 2015.
In 2014, Facebook commissioned the cultural insights and strategy consultancy Crowd DNA to create a study in relation with Intagram and its teen users. The study conducted survey and interviews of teens from ages 13 to 24 and are using Instagram. Since Instagram requires that members should be 13 and older, the study chose ages 13 to 24 for the entire surveys and interviews.
The teen participants were from 13 countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the UK and the US.
The study entitled “Coming of Age on Screens” and it examined today’s mobile-first mentality, mentality, constant connectivity and their tendency to express themselves online.
Crowd DNA discovered that both teens and young adults have a positive opinion of Instagram. Around 40 percent of the teens who participated in the study described the Facebook-owned app as:
- Current – 42 percent
- Friendly – 40 percent
- Trendy – 39 percent
- Creative – 37 percent
“Coming of Age on Screens” also found out why teens like Instagram. According to them, the app nurtures the relationships with their friends. They feel more connected to those people they already know.
